 Bernards Township Education Foundation History

For three years from 1998 until 2001, the BTEF raised over $100,000. Grants were made to local educators to fund mini-workshops, continuing education or micro projects. Fund raising activities included managed events and individual contributions from local businesses and township residents. In 2000, the BTEF sponsored an all day rock and roll concert, called “Rockin Ridge”.  Over 2,000 people of all ages attended this music festival which raised $10,000 for the Virginia Price Scholarship Fund.

In 1999, the BTEF in partnership with the Price Family created the Virginia Price Scholarship Fund.  Virginia Price was a teacher and a graduate of Ridge High School.  For ten years, she taught English Literature and American Studies.  Virginia died at age 43 from cancer. Before she passed away, her wish was that a fund be established to help deserving students. Scholarships are awarded annually to students who demonstrate personal triumph despite a disability, special personal circumstance, or other misfortune outside of their control.  Scholarship winners will be recognized for overcoming their challenges and not allowing themselves to be defeated.

In 2001, when the PTO’s received gaming licenses and 501(c)3 status, the BTEF went into dormancy rather then compete with the PTO’s for the same funding dollars. In the summer of 2006, as property tax reform began to impact local school budgets, 30 parents and citizens began discussions about revitalizing the BTEF. A series of informal and town hall meetings were undertaken in January and February of 2007. A community consensus was established on refocusing the BTEF on program development and fundraising activities from corporate sponsors and private foundations. The local PTO’s would continue event style fundraising and manage individual contributions. In March of 2007, the BTEF held elections for the Board of Trustees and Executive Officers. A three year Strategic Plan was drafted and approved. A Functional Organizational structure was put into place to support the Strategic Plan. In the first year of operation, over $35,000 in revenue was generated. Trustees and Corporate Officers serve pro bono. Operating expenses are closely managed and represent less then 3.5% of total income. For every dollar donated, over 96 cents are put toward the BTEF mission.
